SLJ: Sea Safari – Kick Start

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, I was challenged to create a new species of sea creature. If I was on an expedition and found a new species, what would it look like.

I decided to combine two already existing sea creatures, a turtle and starfish. I chose to do the body of a turtle, and the arms of a starfish. The startle is a creation of the breeding of a turtle and starfish. There is only a population of 100 left in the ENTIRE WORLD! Startles are very small and not very visible, but can be found in the Tupian zoo (made up).

I enjoyed this activity because I got make my own sea creature and 2 facts about it. I was able to use my creativity and ideas to put together my own sea creature creation using polypad.

SLJ: Chippy Challenge – Step it up

For this Summer Learning Journey, I was challenged to create a logo for the fish n chips menu activity.

I went online and took inspiration from restaurants around New Zealand. Once I’ve got my idea, I went onto Canva and started creating my logo. It took me around 10 minutes to find the perfect font. For my slogan, I went online and took one from google. ‘Reel-y ‘fish’ing you a tasty treat’

I enjoyed this activity because I got to make my own restaurant logo for the fish n Chips menu that I created.

SLJ: Chippy Challenge – Kick Start

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, I was challenged to create a unique fish and chips menu.

I decided to include the main cources, sauces, and desserts. I chose to add salmon, tuna, cod, and snapper as my fishes for the dish. I chose 5 sauces, tomato sauce, ranch, garlic aioli, sweet chilli, and lemon butter. Lastly, for the desserts, I chose Ice cream, a slice of any choice of pie, Caramel Brownie, Cake, and Pavlova. I added high quality images to represent the items in my Fish n Chips shop.

Something that made this activity enjoyable were the many options you could add onto your menu, from desserts to toppings and drinks.

SLJ: Beluga Whales – Step it up

For this step it up Summer Learning activity, I was challenged to create two creature cards that showcase their similarities, differences, strengths and weaknesses.

I looked at Pokemon cards for inspiration. I went onto the internet, and chose images of a narwhal and beluga whales. I added a Hp (health points) for both cards, the attack level, and block level. I added descriptions of both cards and what their abilities are. Once that was done, my cards were complete. Instead on naming my cards by their name like Beluga Whales, I chose to name it their scientific name to make it look more advanced.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my knowledge of both Beluga whales and Narwhals to make two creature cards.

SLJ: Narwhals, Unicorns of the Sea – Kick Start

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, I was challenged to create a poster that gives people a greater understanding of Narwhals. There were videos and links to websites provided on the Summer Learning Journey for me to click on and learn facts about Narwhals from.

Narwhals are known as Unicorns of the sea. The Narwhal horn isn’t a horn, but it’s a tooth. It doesn’t grow from their forehead, but from out of the lip. It’s similar to tusks of an elephant and walruses, but their tusks are curved. The Narwhal’s tooth is the only straight tusk in the world, and it grows in a counterclockwise spiral. It is pretty flexible and can bend a foot from any direction without breaking.

Narwhals are able to dive a mile deep into the ocean. Whenever they need air, they squeeze themselves through the cracks in the ice. As they grow older, their appearance changes. Newborns are grey, juveniles are blue – black, and old narwhals are nearly white.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to create my own narwhal and learnt about Narwhals and their horn.

SLJ: Masks of Te Moana – Step it up

For this Summer Learning activity, I was challenged to create a digital mask based on a sea creature using Google Drawings, using ocean textures with shapes. I could choose to make whether a swimming mask or a tribal mask, and I chose to do the swimming mask.

I chose to do a shark, but not just an ordinary shark. I chose to do make my swimming mask based on baby shark from Pingfong. It isn’t the exact appearance but its similar. I used the template that was provided on the Summer Learning Journey. I added shark teeth on top and drew the main bit of the shark and made it yellow to represent baby shark. I added eyes and the shark fin. Finally, as finishing touches, I added bubbles to make it look more oceany (if that’s a word).

I enjoyed this activity because I got to create my own swimming mask with my own ideas.

SLJ: Masks of Te Moana – Kick Start

For this Summer Learning Journey acitivity, I was challenged to create an ocean themed mask. I took inspiration from the internet and started creating my mask. I decided to create a starfish based mask. First off, I drew out the base of my mask, which were two starfishes next to each other. I chose to use the colour orange for my mask because starfishes are usually orange or brownish, but can sometimes be seen as violet. After drawing the base I drew on my eye holes, and cut it out. I then added circles to make it look more like a starfish and to add detail. Once I was happy with the way my starfish looked, I was done.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my creativity to create an ocean themed mask, and I felt proud of myself in the process.

SLJ: Wavey Words – Step it up

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, we were challenged to create an ocean-related alliteration poem.

But before I started, I had to complete the Alphabet brainstorm task. For the alphabet brainstorm task I had to write a sentence and make sure that a word in the sentence includes which letter I’m writing in. For example, if I’m writing in the B section, I have to include an ocean related word starting with a B. Once that was completed, I started on my poem. I decided to use the letter ‘S’ for my alliteration poem for it was the easiest. This is what I came up with: Soft waves swishing and swaying, sparkling and shimmering, sandy shores and splashing. I designed a picture that represents my alliteration poem.

I enjoyed this activity because I learnt how to make an alliteration poem and had to use my knowledge of ocean related words to create it.

SLJ: Wavey Words – Kick Start

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, we were challenged to create an ocean-themed word art. But before that, we had to complete the word wheel. For the word wheel, we had to list as many words as we could on the themes such as Birds, Objects, and Marine Life. Once I completed the word wheel, I moved onto creating my word art. I decided to create an oval type of shape for my words art and chose different shades of blue for it represents the ocean.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my knowledge of ocean related words to create my word art.

SLJ: Cartoon Collectables – Step it up

For this Summer Learning activity, we had to create a digital collectables card based on a sea creature using Google Drawings.

My character is called Bubbles and is an axolotl. I decided to make my axolotl surfing because it is now summer and the beaches are open for swimming and surfing when there are large waves. I chose to an axolotl because it is a unique creatue and is a species of salamander, and can regenerate their own limbs if cut. It can repair their legs, arms, tail, lower jaw, brain, and heart. A challenge I faced while creating my card was drawing the waves. I had to take inspiration from online because I did not know how to draw waves. I also had to add those little details into my waves to make it look like a wave.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my creativity and imagination to create a one of a kind card collectables.
