Our Whenua

L.I: To connect to the Whenua around PBS (our local area)

For this activity we looked at most of the streets around us. Most of the streets have a definition. For example, Upham Road was named after Charles Hazlitt Upham. He became one of only three people to win the Victoria Cross twice! For what he did in Crete, 1941 and also in Eygpt, 1942. He in the only person to achieve this as a combat soldier. We also did history research about the schools around us. For example “Did you know that Point England was established in 1780s!”.

This activity was  entertaining especially with all that information I got while researching on the internet.

Care Values

L.I: To understand what our CARE Values mean to us.

At Panmure Bridge School, we have CARE Values. These values are Confidence, Attitude, Respect, and Excellence. We got into groups of two and discussed what are some ways to show the Care Values. One of the ways to show Confidence can be having to speak infront of a crowd. Attitude can be having to share your own ideas with other classmates. There are a variety of ways to show our CARE Values, and these are only a few.

I enjoyed this activity because I was able to use the information I learnt and make a DLO explaining how to show the CARE Values.

Personal Passion – Excellence Care Award

This DLO is an activity to earn an Excellence Care Award. As you can see my personal passion is playing the violin. One of my favourite pieces to play is “Gavotte from Mignon”. Because of all the semiquavers and quavers in this piece, it gives me a challenge. But one of my dislikes on playing the violin is having to keep a great posture and having to place your fingers in the correct place, and the pressure differences depending on which part of the bow you are in.

Statistical Investigation – Blog Posts

L.I: To read the text, gather, sort, graph, and analyse the data.

This DLO shows how many blog posts Lisea has posted from 2022 – 2023. To gather the data, we checked Lisea’s blog posts from 2022 – 2023, and recorded it onto a spreadsheet. With the data collected, we can see that the month with most blogs is November 2022. Me and Lisea posed a question and we came up with “Why are the more blogs on one month than the other”?. And we came up with some reasons why like there aren’t that many blogs on January because school hasn’t started yet.

Mean, Median, and Mode: What are they?

Mean: To find the mean, add all the numbers and divide the sum by the amount of numbers there are. Median: To find the Median, order the numbers from smallest to largest, and whatever number is in the middle that is the Median. In some cases there may be 2 median numbers. Just add them together and divide it by 2. Mode: The Mode is ordering the numbers from smallest to largest. And whichever number is most repetitive, that would be the Mode.

Haiku Poems – Our Whenua

A Haiku Poem is a poem that has an exact number of syllables. The structure of a Haiku poem is 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables. Syllables are chunks of a word. When hearing the word Our Whenua, I suddenly think of our Tamaki river. With the calming tides, welcoming wakas. So that’s what we included into our poem.

This activity was definitely entertaining, especially because of the syllables rule, making it a challenge.

Haiku Poem – Fire

The structure of a Haiku poem is 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables. Syllables are chunks of a word. We had to choose between Fire, Ice, and Water. We came up with words that related with fire, and used some of them into a verse. With the syllable rule, making this Haiku poem was difficult.

What I liked about writing this haiku poem, is that it gave me a challenge. By having the syllable rule to make it challenging.

Haiku Poem – Maungarei

The structure of a Haiku poem is 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables. Syllables are chunks of a word. We got to chose our own Topic so we chose Maungarei. Before writing this poem, we did Moment in Time poems about Maungarei, and we had a trip up Maungarei. So we had plenty of ideas and information. This activity was challenging because it limited the amount of words. But I like having a bit of a challenge.

Place Value

L.I: To explore numbers (Written, Expanded, Numerals)

Place Values are numbers separated into their own columns. An example of place Value is, in 123, the 1 is in the hundreds column, the 2 is in the tens column, and the 3 is in the ones column. To make this DLO, me and my partner first learned about what Place Value is, and then explained it in our own words. We added facts into our DLO. Did you know that Place Value is named Place Value because it has a value based on its place. Another interesting fact is that Place Value is the basis of the entire number system.

This activity was very enjoyable because I received plenty of information.

Provocation – Theft of 96 medals

L.I: To evaluate the facts and make an informed opinion.

A Provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Our Provocation for this topic was “Did the punishment fit the crime?”. We did two perspectives, A and B. To get all this information, we had to read articles. And make our opinions and perspectives from the information provided in the article. We thought that the punishment was too easy, especially after stealing 96 precious medals. But to take it to the next level, they decided to return it and take the reward.

What I enjoyed doing was making different opinions depending on which perspective we are writing about.

International Current Events

L.I: To identify the author’s purpose.

For this task, we looked at articles that related to the words we’ve chosen. After reading the paragraph we summarised it into 10 words and made a Google my maps with the summary, link and images included.

This activity was very interesting because I learnt what was happening in the outside world, and it gave me a challange because I had to only use 10 words, limiting the amount of words I use.
