Trip – Howick Historical Village

L.I: To make a collage about the Howick Historical Village.

The Howick Historical Village trip, was an amazing experience. I loved all the activities that I participated in. My favourite was the butter making though. When we arrived, it looked as if I time traveled back in time to the 1870’s. Did you know that if you are a female at the age of 12, you should be married by then. We first went around the Village, and explored the houses and school. The houses were quite small, especially for a family of 5. The attic was where the children slept, and the parents slept downstairs. The stairs were steep and dangerous, so we had to be careful. We then moved onto the school. The school looked very strict. We learned that if you went to school in 1870’s, when the teacher walked in, you would have to stand up and sit back down once they reached the front. If you weren’t paying attention, your table would be smacked. While on our tour, we noticed some birds hanging. They are called taxidermy. Taxidermy is an the art of preserving animals by taking out it’s insides, and stuffing it. The next activity was the trolley making. There were wooden blocks and wheels. There were also bolts and nuts. We made our trolleys just by looking at an image. Once our trolleys were made we raced from the starting point to the end. The butter we made was so creamy and soft. To make the butter you have to churn the cream until its the same consistency of butter. We were taught a rhyme “Churn butter, Churn, y/n is waiting at the gate, waiting for some butter cake, Churn butter, Churn.

This activity was interesting because there were some many facts I learned. Like did you know, that if you were a single teacher, in 1870’s, you weren’t allowed to eat ice cream. And you had to come to school 2 hours before it started to clean the floors, start the fire, and prepare the lesson!

3D shapes

L.I: Label 3D shapes. The name and properties of 3D shapes.

3D shapes are shapes that have 3 Dimensions, length, width, and height. The properties of 3D shapes are how many faces, vertices (corners), and edges there are. For this activity we had to find everyday items that are in the shape of any 3D shape we chose, and to name the shape’s properties. We did a Cylinder as a pringles can, a sphere as a soccer ball, a cuboid as an eraser, a cube as an ice cube, a hemisphere as a bowl, and lastly, we did a rectangular prism as a book. A cuboid and a rectangular prism are the same thing.

This activity was interesting because I never knew that the faces, vertices (corners) and edges are properties.

Moment in Time Planner

L.I: To write a poem that describes as Moment in Time.

To write a Moment in Time Poem, you would need to imagine how you would feel or what you would think if you are in that scenario. To do this, we watched a documentery of a man in a safe looking glass/plastic cube. And a polar bear was trying to attack the man. We wrote this poem and used the words “Show not tell”. We used the senses Auditory, Visual, Tactile and what thoughts would pop up in our head if we were in that situation.

I enjoyed writing this poem because I used a lot of adjectives and used Wordhippo to enhance the vocabulary of my poem.

Sentences Structure

L.I: To explore sentence structure.

All sentences begin with a Capital letters and end with a full stop. Simple sentences include nouns and verbs. A noun is the name of something, or something you can physically touch. An example of a simple sentence could be, “The cat sat on the mat”. The noun would be the cat and mat, and the verb would be sat. A Compound sentence includes two simple sentences that are joined by using conjunction words. Like for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. An example of a Compound sentence would be “The cat sat on the mat and the dog laid beside the mat”. A Complex sentence includes independent clauses and dependent clauses. With a word from AAAWWWUBBIS. From this challenge I can see  that I have a clear understanding of Simple and Compound Sentences. I now know that I need to focus on Complex sentences.

I enjoyed this activity because it taught me what I needed to focus more on.

Simple and compound sentences

L.I: To explore sentence structure.

All sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. A simple sentence includes nouns and verbs. A noun is a name of a thing or something you can physically touch, and a verb is an action or something you can physically do. Compound sentences use two simple sentences and are combined with a conjunction word. For example “I went to the store and bought ice cream”. The conjunction word here is “and”. Here are some examples of conjunction words: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so.

This activity was interesting because I learnt what conjunction words are and the difference between a simple sentence and a compound sentence. I also learnt how to explain what a noun and what a verb is.

Matariki Stars

L.I: To plan, design, and create a class star for Matariki that tells a story.

To create this star, I had to find a story for it to tell. I decided to do the time when Maui fished up a big fish, but now known as the North Island. The story goes that when they went fishing, they had no bait so Maui punched his own nose and used his blood as bait. He covered his hook with his blood and hauled it down into the sea. And that’s why there’s a red outline around the hook. And the 9 stars above them are the Matariki stars. Whose names are Matariki, Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Tupu-a-nuku, Tupu-a-rangi, Ururangi, Pohutukawa, and Hiwa-i-te-rangi.

I enjoyed making this star because I learnt another Maori myth while making this.

Treaty of Waitangi

L.I: To understand what honouring the treaty means.

For this activity, we learnt information about what the Treaty of Waitangi is, and why it’s an important part of New Zealand. But to get that information, we read a book called “Te Tiriti o Waitangi”, by Ross Calman, Mark Derby, and Toby Morris. Some of the reasons why we thought the Tiriti o Waitangi is important to New Zealand is that it’s the founding document of our country. And it represents the 3 P’s which are Patnership, Participation, and Protection. We think that the Treaty of Waitangi is an agreement signed in 1840’s by over 500 chiefs. But Important words weren’t properly explained in Te Reo Maroi.

This activity was interesting because there some interesting facts and information in the book. Like did you know that the Treaty of Waitangi’s draft was written in one night!

Copyright and Attribution

Copyright is when you use other people’s videos, images, music and even ideas, without permission. Copyright can also be using someone’s music and not giving them credit. But Attribution is when you use someone’s music, images, ideas or videos with permission, and giving them credit.

This activity was interesting because I now know what Copyright and Attribution means.

Our Whenua

L.I: To connect to the Whenua around PBS (our local area)

For this activity we looked at most of the streets around us. Most of the streets have a definition. For example, Upham Road was named after Charles Hazlitt Upham. He became one of only three people to win the Victoria Cross twice! For what he did in Crete, 1941 and also in Eygpt, 1942. He in the only person to achieve this as a combat soldier. We also did history research about the schools around us. For example “Did you know that Point England was established in 1780s!”.

This activity was  entertaining especially with all that information I got while researching on the internet.

Care Values

L.I: To understand what our CARE Values mean to us.

At Panmure Bridge School, we have CARE Values. These values are Confidence, Attitude, Respect, and Excellence. We got into groups of two and discussed what are some ways to show the Care Values. One of the ways to show Confidence can be having to speak infront of a crowd. Attitude can be having to share your own ideas with other classmates. There are a variety of ways to show our CARE Values, and these are only a few.

I enjoyed this activity because I was able to use the information I learnt and make a DLO explaining how to show the CARE Values.
